Driving Information

Provides support and a tailor made tuition package to all people with disabilities and older people, who are wanting to learn to drive, or who need refreshers. Publishes a series of publications around driving and how to succeed behind the wheel. Part of the AA group.

Mobilise is a self help organisation formed by the merger of the Disabled Drivers Motor Club and the Disabled Drivers Association. Runs an information service for both members and groups and a confidential telephone and mail answering service. Matters typically referred include DLA (mobility component) and Motability matters, driving licences, insurance availability, driving assessment, vehicle and adaptation choices. Publishes a monthly magazine and supplied other publications through an Online Shop.

Advises the UK Government on access for disabled people to transport and the built environment. Organisation no longer operational, website maintained for historical purposes.


Centre for issuing driving licences. Those who hold a driving licence are legally required to notify the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), Drivers Medical Group as soon as they become aware that they have any disability which is likely to last more than three months, and which is, or which may become, likely to affect their ability to drive. It does not necessarily mean the licence will be withdrawn, but simply that the agency can review the situation. Failure to inform the agency could affect the insurance policy of the driver and is an offence.

Helps disabled people experience the fulfilment and control of driving a motor vehicle. All vehicles are dual control, though the co driver is usually there to encourage, as a tutor and as a navigator. There is an activity centre with tactile sculptures and dismantled car engines for people with visual impairments. Centre is fully accessible.

Registered charity offering assessment and advice to older and disabled people who wish to drive or be a passenger, or use a pavement vehicle. Assessment by OT and Driving Instructor followed by a written report. A subsidised fee is charged and a free information service is also available. The centre is a member of the UK Forum of Mobility Centres and is Motability accredited. Open Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, and Wednesday and Friday by special appointment.

The Motability Scheme enables disabled people to use their government-funded mobility allowance to lease a new car, scooter or powered wheelchair. The scheme is available to those who receive the enhanced rate of the mobility component of Personal Independence Payment or the enhanced rate of the mobility component of Armed Forces Independence Payment, or those in receipt of the higher rate mobility component of DLA and WPMS.
