Office furniture & equipment
Office furniture and equipment is freely available in high street shops. Products in this section generally have non-standard features making them more suitable for users with a disability. Some charities and organisations specialise in these types of products. For example, AbilityNet gives advice on computer related equipment. Access to Work (AtW) is available to offer practical advice/help in a flexible way that can be tailored to suit the needs of an individual in a particular job. AtW does not replace the normal responsibilities of the employer to implement Health and Safety regulations or replace the responsibilities required by the Disability Discrimination Act. AtW gives advice and information to disabled people and employers. Jobcentre Plus pays a grant through AtW towards any extra employment costs that result from a person's disability. AtW can help pay for a range of options, for example: - communicator support at interview; - support worker; - specialist equipment to help user function in the workplace; - adaptation to premises or existing equipment; - help with additional costs of travel to or in work for users who are unable to use public transport. Contact the local Disability Employment Adviser (DEA) through the nearest Jobcentre Plus office for further information.
