Pill organisers which dispense

This section includes medication dispensers which have built in alarms. These can be set to sound an alarm to prompt the user when to take their medication. When the alarm sounds the device will also dispense the correct medication and dose for the set time by releasing or opening a small compartment. As the unit only dispenses the tablets at the required time the risk of taking a repeat dose may be reduced. The device recognises when the pill/s has been removed from the dispenser and the alarm stops.

These units use rotating carousels that require filling with a week or a months worth of pills. Some manufacturers have agreed procedures for the carousel to be filled by chemists if required (there may be a charge for this service). If the dispenser is to be filled by a chemist then the user may need to purchase extra carousels so they can have one in use and one at the chemists.

Some medication is not suitable for use in these dispensers as it needs to be kept airtight.

Some models can text or email a friend or relative if the medication is not taken. Telecare pill dispensers are also available which will automatically notify a help centre if the medication is not taken.
